IFP School wins the IBA Europe 2014

    March 12, 2014

A team of five students from the IFP School Petroleum Geosciences program, made up of geologists and geophysicists of the 2014 Class, won the Imperial Barrel Award (IBA) Europe competition in Prague on 7 March.

Daichi Yoon (France), Jose Javier Garcia Criado (Spain), Arthur Guillien (France), Ademola Olatunbosun (Nigeria) and Samuel Rivas Dorado (Spain) assessed the petroleum potential of an area in the Cooper/Eromanga basin (onshore Australia) from real industrial data. The data set consisted of three 3D seismic blocks covering 762 square kilometers and three wells.

The students presented their findings in front of a panel of industry experts from the BG Group, BP, CGG, ExxonMobil, Maersk, Nexen, OMV, Shell, Solo Oil and Total. Eric Deville, research professor for the IFP School Exploration-Production center, accompanied the group.

The IFP School team competed against 26 European universities and engineering schools. This is the third time in five years (2010, 2012 and 2014) that the School has won the IBA Europe competition.

The School will go on to represent Europe in the world championship, competing against the winning teams from each region. The championship will be held from 4 to 6 April 2014 in Houston, Texas, during the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) international congress.
