IFP School's victory in the IBA Europe competition

    March 23, 2012

A team of five students from the IFP School Petroleum Geosciences program, made up of geologists and geophysicists of the 2012 class, won the IBA (Imperial Barrel Award) Europe competition in Prague on 17 March.

Pauline Bourguignon (France), Laura Donadi (Venezuela), Cyrielle Dumont (France), Orian Hernandez (Venezuela) and Sébastien Nahan (France) assessed the petroleum potential of an area in the Cooper/Eromanga basin (onshore Australia) from real industrial data. The data set consisted of a 3D seismic block covering 1,200 square kilometers and 11 wells.

The students presented their findings in front of a panel of industry experts from ExxonMobil, Maersk, CGGVeritas, Total, Shell, BP, Nexen and BG Group. Pierre-Yves Déquirez, coordinator of the Petroleum Geosciences program, accompanied the group.

The IFP School team competed against 20 European universities and engineering schools. The team will go on to represent Europe in the world championship, competing against the winning teams from all the regions. The championship will be held April 20 and 21 2012 in Long Beach, California, during the AAPG (American Association of Petroleum Geologists) international congress.
